Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left her family and she was fostered by her mother grandparents and godparents. She suffered from an anxiety disorder based on word associations as a young teenager. Ford began to be fascinated by acting as a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she was not a fit. Ford reapplied to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth attempt she was admitted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. Shaun Dingwall was later to play frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however at the time, she had already made her TV debut on the 1991 season of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate was on television in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Apart from her regular stage work, Tate was a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed for her stand up comedy in 1996.
